re: Yue's ethnicity
Someone pointed out yesterday that on her myspace, Seychelle Gabriel identifies her ethnicity as Caucasian/White.However, on her IMDB resume, Gabriel says her ethnicity is "Caucasian, Latin/Hispanic, Sicilian, French"
The letter the producers sent to MANAA does not name her, but lists "an American actress of Italian, French and Mexican heritage" that I assume is her.
I'm not an expert in cultures or ethnicities so I'm not sure what to take away from this information. Does that mean that Seychelle Gabriel is a White Hispanic or White Latino American since she self-identifies as being white? (eg: Cameron Diaz)

Yes, she would technically be a white Hispanic.2 years ago

Poor Mike and Bryan... their wonderful work has been literally desecrated...
That's it... Hollywood, I swear to you, I will NOT hand over MY stories to you, no matter how 'shiny' your contract is, or how much money you try to bribe me, I will NEVER EVER do it if you whitewash characters like the ones in ATLA and Earthsea. And I believe that writers and artists who have POC characters should do the same thing. >:(
(PS Apologies for that comment above, but I thought to say it because I don't want to see people whose works that HAVE people of color and have a good story with them, have their rights bought out by these movie corporations.)

That armor looks dang familiar...
Okay, looking at the pics of the armor in detail rang a bell, so I went through the huge stack of old Smithsonian magazines I got at a yard sale a few months back... and sure enough, there's an image from the March 2000 issue. The armor used looks remarkably like Scythian -- a horse culture steppe people from the Ukraine -- right down to the horsetail topknot in the helmet and scale/plate armor tunic... I'll see if I can get some pics from the article but at least now we know... their Fire Nation is South Asian/Indian subcontinent with armor from North Asia/Ukranian steppes.Wow, the shipping charges alone must have cost a fortune, no wonder the Fire Nation's pissed all the time. :-/

failwhat we've been given.I think I've commented on most of the things I disliked in the last post about the trailer but: All Hail the Holy Roman Fire Nation!? Man, I think that location is awful! It looks like a train station with some home-sewn banners thrown up on the walls. I know, I know, we're getting into nitpicking and away from the point of this comm, I just need a safe space to vent. :/

Getting a better look at the tattoos, I like the details put into them. However, the fact the ones on the back of his arms aren't connected to the ones on his back is annoying. That's just a minor detail compared to the fact that his back tattoos are in the shape of a CROSS.
Nice inclusion of the DBZ meme. XD

Hijra?
Had no idea Aang is a HijraWhat does that mean? The first thing that came to my mind was the Hijri calendar, but for some reason I don't think that's what you meant?
Anyways, the stuff on Aang's (or are we going to call him Ong now?) back looks like alchemy. I guess they thought that was more wholesome than exposing young Christians to the concept of chakras. And I don't really know how people can see Rathbone and Peltz as Sokka and Katara. I really can't, no matter how hard I try. And I'm hoping that's a lighting issue and movie!Yue isn't actually blonde, because. ugh.
I wish I could love this as unreservedly as I did the show. These pictures remind me of the excitement I felt when I first heard of this movie. I wanted so much to be able to support this.

Re: Hijra?
In South Asia (India, Pakistan, etc.) a Hijra is a member of the "third gender"--intersexed or male-bodied (but emasculated) people who generally adopt the clothing and appearances of females.* Not sure what movie!Aang's forehead tattoos have to do with it, but I'm hardly an expert.*Feel free to correct any mistake I've made. I got my (very basic) facts from reading John Irving's A Son of the Circus. Wikipedia goes into more detail.

D:. Maybe, maybe one day this movie will be a flop and for the next ten years a new version will be made ten years later! Right? Kind of like that first Hulk movie.OH GOD THE DENIAL ISN'T HELPING!
ALSO, WHY IS ZUKO, INDIAN? CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR.

Re: But...why?
I'll vote for this. Hell, before Peter Jackson's LOTR there was Ralph Bakshi doing one half and Rankin Bass doing the other."Bide your time and hold out hope" -- Count of Monte Cristo

Why? Really. This is not the Avatar: TLA that I remember.
Hmm...Speaking of which, does anyone have a nice screenshot of the original version of that sixth screenshot from the animated series opening? I can't find one, my Google-fu is just not working now. I did find a nice shot of the animated close-up, though. I think that a side-by-side comparison could really illustrate that two-of-these-things-do-not-belong in the movie shot.
