re: Yue's ethnicity

Someone pointed out yesterday that on her myspace, Seychelle Gabriel identifies her ethnicity as Caucasian/White.

However, on her
IMDB resume, Gabriel says her ethnicity is "Caucasian, Latin/Hispanic, Sicilian, French"

The letter the producers sent to MANAA does not name her, but lists "an American actress of Italian, French and Mexican heritage" that I assume is her.

I'm not an expert in cultures or ethnicities so I'm not sure what to take away from this information. Does that mean that Seychelle Gabriel is a White Hispanic or White Latino American since she self-identifies as being white? (eg: Cameron Diaz)

Re: Yue's ethnicity

Yes, she would technically be a white Hispanic.

Thanks! Actually, I'm trying to work out a deal with the RiffTrax people to have members of Racebending.com guest star on The Last Airbender RiffTrax when it comes out so I'm trying to put my cred out there.

Later this month I'm going to put out an iRiff for The Forbidden Kingdom. All money made will go to Racebending.com =D

I would like to suggest that a donation button be put on the racebending.com website, to raise money so that when the movie comes out, we can send Mike and Bryan some condolence flowers. Seriously. If ever two guys were in need of a pick-me-up bouquet, that would be them.

My icon says it all: That was the face I made after scrolling and seeing those, while also cringing and feeling sick at the same time. Also, THAT IS NOT YUE! Oh god... my eyes... my brain... T_T
Poor Mike and Bryan... their wonderful work has been literally desecrated...

That's it... Hollywood, I swear to you, I will NOT hand over MY stories to you, no matter how 'shiny' your contract is, or how much money you try to bribe me, I will NEVER EVER do it if you whitewash characters like the ones in ATLA and Earthsea. And I believe that writers and artists who have POC characters should do the same thing. >:(

(PS Apologies for that comment above, but I thought to say it because I don't want to see people whose works that HAVE people of color and have a good story with them, have their rights bought out by these movie corporations.)

I just noticed something else. Aren't his tattoos supposed to lead into his arm pits? :| I don't understand how they can mess up this badly on a blue freaking arrow tattoo. This includes everything, not just what I said.

[info]djknom

February 11 2010, 21:52:11 UTC 2 years ago

Maybe they changed it because of what his tattoos imply--that he has ink under his armpits and even on his butt. They even messed up on the blue aspect of his tattoos.

Urgh.

That armor looks dang familiar...

Okay, looking at the pics of the armor in detail rang a bell, so I went through the huge stack of old Smithsonian magazines I got at a yard sale a few months back... and sure enough, there's an image from the March 2000 issue. The armor used looks remarkably like Scythian -- a horse culture steppe people from the Ukraine -- right down to the horsetail topknot in the helmet and scale/plate armor tunic... I'll see if I can get some pics from the article but at least now we know... their Fire Nation is South Asian/Indian subcontinent with armor from North Asia/Ukranian steppes.

Wow, the shipping charges alone must have cost a fortune, no wonder the Fire Nation's pissed all the time. :-/

Shame about Aang's all serious business expressions. =/ But I don't think Sokka and Katara stand out that much in the snapshot of them and the rest of the water tribe. The one that clearly looks 'Asian' (East Asian, at least), are the few people to their left. And if I look really closely, the kid to their right seems most probably East Asian. The rest of the people, skimming through look like they're light skinned. Of course this isn't considering whether their white actors look appropriate in the clothing.

[info]flogurself

February 11 2010, 23:18:03 UTC 2 years ago

All the people around them are Inuits, the people the Water Tribe is based off of. It's glaring because they could get all these Inuit people to play extras, but they couldn't get 2 of them to play the Inuit leads.

thanks for pointing out the whole "Holy Roman Fire Nation" thing. Watching the trailer, I had a sense that the room was wrong, but this screenshot...ouch. Oh, dear.

[info]topazera

February 11 2010, 23:08:10 UTC 2 years ago

You're welcome, I'm glad the screencaps could be put to use! Sorry they're gigantic but I like to capture every detail of the fail what we've been given.

I think I've commented on most of the things I disliked in the last post about the trailer but: All Hail the Holy Roman Fire Nation!? Man, I think that location is awful! It looks like a train station with some home-sewn banners thrown up on the walls. I know, I know, we're getting into nitpicking and away from the point of this comm, I just need a safe space to vent. :/

[info]erikonil

February 11 2010, 23:56:53 UTC 2 years ago

Well, I can't say I'm surprised given that the actor playing Ozai said his armor looked like a mix of Greek and Roman. I might have bought it if they had totally gone whole hog on the "Fire Nation is Indian" thing, except...they're not. It's such a mix mash that I'm not sure what's holding the whole thing together except vague colour pallets.

The shot with white!Sokka and white!Katara and the Inuit extras... They're not even trying to hide it, and some people don't even have a problem with that.

Getting a better look at the tattoos, I like the details put into them. However, the fact the ones on the back of his arms aren't connected to the ones on his back is annoying. That's just a minor detail compared to the fact that his back tattoos are in the shape of a CROSS.

Nice inclusion of the DBZ meme. XD

[info]musogato

February 11 2010, 23:50:48 UTC 2 years ago

Wow, seeing those screenshots in high def makes the fail unavoidable. Not!Sokka and not!Katara stick out like sore thumbs, and their (lack of) expressions in every shot look awful. I'm not a fan of Ong's tattoes either. (Although part of it is because I like the solid blue arrow better), the overall look seems too FMA-like, and even with that aside, parts of the back seem disconjointed. It seems more like various scribbles thrown together instead of a flowing message or whatever it's supposed to mean. Although Aang's sad/upset pics look genuine, if he's that way and SRS BSNS for the entire movie, it's going to be really depressing and flat.

Bottom line: These aren't my Avatar characters. But that's nothing new. :(

[info]erikonil

February 12 2010, 00:06:04 UTC 2 years ago

I know. I'm still confused as to why they didn't just use Tibetan tattoos as a base for the redesign. Many are very geometric and would have broken up the solid design, but still not wavered too far from the source. It's what I used when I drew up my version of more photo realistic Avatar characters.

Photobucket

My inspiration for Aang, came by way of an adorable little Buddhist monk from Burma.

Everyone looks so out of place. I'm starting to wonder if Zuko and Sokka were switched at birth, and Katara was adopted. Maybe that'll be M. Night's twist?

[info]erikonil

February 12 2010, 00:43:31 UTC 2 years ago

Seriously. If there was a group to go white, the Fire Nation would have been it. If you take the skin tones from the cartoon and take a look at the colour make up, they're the closest to Caucasian. The Air Nomads actually have a lot of yellow to their skin tone (which makes colouring them a pain because if you don't get the right colours for shades it looks waaaaay off), which most people would associate with "Asian skin tone."

February 12 2010, 01:24:48 UTC 2 years ago

Hijra?

Had no idea Aang is a Hijra
What does that mean? The first thing that came to my mind was the Hijri calendar, but for some reason I don't think that's what you meant?

Anyways, the stuff on Aang's (or are we going to call him Ong now?) back looks like alchemy. I guess they thought that was more wholesome than exposing young Christians to the concept of chakras. And I don't really know how people can see Rathbone and Peltz as Sokka and Katara. I really can't, no matter how hard I try. And I'm hoping that's a lighting issue and movie!Yue isn't actually blonde, because. ugh.

I wish I could love this as unreservedly as I did the show. These pictures remind me of the excitement I felt when I first heard of this movie. I wanted so much to be able to support this.

[info]jacobford

February 12 2010, 01:34:38 UTC 2 years ago

Re: Hijra?

In South Asia (India, Pakistan, etc.) a Hijra is a member of the "third gender"--intersexed or male-bodied (but emasculated) people who generally adopt the clothing and appearances of females.* Not sure what movie!Aang's forehead tattoos have to do with it, but I'm hardly an expert.

*Feel free to correct any mistake I've made. I got my (very basic) facts from reading John Irving's A Son of the Circus. Wikipedia goes into more detail.

Why? Really. This is not the Avatar: TLA that I remember.

Hmm...Speaking of which, does anyone have a nice screenshot of the original version of that sixth screenshot from the animated series opening? I can't find one, my Google-fu is just not working now. I did find a nice shot of the animated close-up, though. I think that a side-by-side comparison could really illustrate that two-of-these-things-do-not-belong in the movie shot.
