Jackson Rathbone and Nicola Peltz at the KCA
24th-Mar-2010 10:46 am
Got these off a post in AvatarSpirit. Nickelodeon is now showing ads promoting the KCA, with Jackson Rathbone and Nicola Peltz doing some slime-bending. It's also possible that Dev Patel will make an appearance at Kid's Choice. Anyway the interesting bit is the new screen from the advert.

This could be Aang's wanted poster, with the first sighting of the fake Asian characters. It does seem that they wanted the Asian-ness but not to explicitly tie it to one country, be it China, Korea or Japan. However, I think the classical script used in the cartoon did have sufficient distance, and it's not really a problem if the entire Avatar-verse uses it.

There are streamers/decorations in the background so the festival from The Deserter is probably in the movie. Wonder why Katara looks so happy about that wanted poster.

For comparison.

Is this still being filmed on the UCLA Campus over Spring Break as it usually is every year?

Yes, it's gonna happen at Pauley Pavilion at UCLA like it is EVERY year. Ugh.

I feel kinda insulted by the fake Asian characters. It's like, that's what the Asian language looks like to you? Complete gibberish? Like it doesn't have an internal logic and coherence (that just happens to be different from the internal logic and coherence of the English language)?

Why are they having such trouble with people's names? Duh, clearly didn't watch the original show...
24th-Mar-2010 12:06 am (UTC)
Cue people saying it looks just like the show!
23rd-Mar-2010 11:57 pm (UTC)
So the first smile we see and it's at what should be a serious moment.. it also looks a bit awkward. Maybe it's out of context, but even so it's an odd moment to pick.

Good god! That 'writing' looks terrible, it looks like the scribbles I did after I drew after seeing Mulan (I was nine, so it isn't like I could research actual Chinese characters)

Not to mention Chinese, Korean, and Japanese all have their roots from the classical version of East Asian calligraphy writing used on the show. There is a reason why they picked that form of calligraphy and it wasn't just for distance, but for inclusion--that calligraphy influenced a ton of Asian writing systems.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian_calligraphy

Only someone fluent in Chinese can tell the difference between the authentic calligraphy and the squiggles in that screen cap. That's why the show was so interesting to me--I was surprised to find that the Chinese writing on the show was actually readable and not http://www.hanzismatter.com/

I can't believe that people actually fall for that "Chinese alphabet" crap. Do they not know anything about the language?
23rd-Mar-2010 11:59 pm (UTC)
Wonder why Katara looks so happy about that wanted poster.

She can't read it, because it's gibberish.
24th-Mar-2010 12:07 am (UTC)
lol. I only thought of that punchline after I posted. Was just waiting for someone else to come up with it.
24th-Mar-2010 12:15 am (UTC)
That's the closest I've seen to a smile on her. That wanted poster of Aang remains the happiest we've seen of his actor, though.

I wish we could film our own commercial showing the marked difference in the show and this movie, along with the racist casting calls and Dee Dee Ricket's whole "if you're Korean, wear a kimono".
24th-Mar-2010 12:26 am (UTC)
WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO PRONOUNCE "SOKKA" FOR THESE PEOPLE?! LAKSJFHDSLKJFGFKBVNLIUEFYUREBLNCDJKSNCDFGVUYLEWINCKDS

And that smile looks SO weird in that context. Not to mention how absolutely fail that gibberish writing looks. DX
24th-Mar-2010 12:41 am (UTC)
JACKSON RATHBONE IS SOU KA?
24th-Mar-2010 12:31 am (UTC)
I've gotta say, that wanted poster looks absolutely ridiculous. I know this the racebending community and all, but seriously, the picture on that poster is just.. At least the bending effects look good. :|
24th-Mar-2010 12:40 am (UTC)
um but the aang poster has chinese looking writing, pointy eyes and a fat nose!! don't they know that's how you draw asians???

(lol)

*Sigh* I think what upsets me the most is that, to the common man, those characters just so totally look "Asian" enough for them to think that it's all well and good. :/ I can already imagine the rebuttal:

HEY WHAT YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT THEY DO HAVE YOUR SILLY CHINESE CHARACTERS LOOK AT THAT POSTER LOLOLOLOL
24th-Mar-2010 01:15 am (UTC)
UGH that wanted poster D: It's like I can see traces of actual words in it, smudged up and turned into gibberish FOR NO REASON. How bloody hard would it have been to ACTUALLY WRITE SOMETHING, instead of creating a pseudo-fake language that looks a bit like the real thing but is actually insultingly rude and POINTLESS. I mean seriously what is the point. Ughhh. >:(

I don't think I could endure watching the videos right now. Maybe later, if I feel like throwing things at the wall. :/
24th-Mar-2010 05:55 am (UTC)
It's like they're going out of their way to show how little they care about the research and care Mike & Bryan put into the original show. :(
24th-Mar-2010 01:33 am (UTC)
...Even though I can only read 'Kanji' (Japanese-version) of 'Hanzi'... PLEASE tell me that I am NOT the only one that just can't make heads or tails, or can even READ what the hell that wanted poster is saying?!
Oh wait, I forgot! This is the 'made up some Asian-gibberish' because actual Asian writings don't mean a thing. Just like how those 'Asian tattoos' are only 'cool-looking' without reading into the actual meaning of the word itself! *weeps*

Why do I get so incredibly sad every time I see pictures of Nicola Peltz as Katara?

It's not that I have anything against her- she's gorgeous and probably a wonderful actress.

But Katara just...isn't white. Everything about this is just so incredibly wrong.
24th-Mar-2010 02:36 am (UTC)
I get a "Raisin in the Sun re-casting video" vibe when I see her turn to the camera and the announcer says

"...and Nicola Peltz is KATARA!"

"What? No she isn't. This is a joke, right?"
24th-Mar-2010 02:33 am (UTC)
This is what should happen to whomever was responsible for this fucking trainwreck of an "adaptation":

24th-Mar-2010 02:59 am (UTC)
This.
24th-Mar-2010 03:24 am (UTC)
How hard is it to pronounce Sokka's name? Jesus Christ.

I'm not too familiar with Hanzi but thanks to my Korean classes I know for a fact that shit on the wanted poster isn't Hanzi! >:|

FUCK THIS SHIT.
24th-Mar-2010 04:33 am (UTC)
Me being Japanese and knowing how to read kanji, it drives me up the wall to see that! ><;
24th-Mar-2010 01:16 pm (UTC)
Wouldn't it be funny if it turns out Mike and/or Bryan drew that poster (Aang, not the writing) and purposely made it look different than the actor?

Because that does not look like the actor to me.
24th-Mar-2010 02:14 pm (UTC)
MTE, and it doesn't have the weird movie arrow either, does it? ._.
24th-Mar-2010 04:31 pm (UTC)
and yet--and yet--if the poster were rendered in Ye Old Englishe we are supposed to suspend disbelief and go "oh that's just so the audience can read it"

but heaven help us to have readable "other than English"

:-/

See I thought the point of making up their own language was to make something unique and not necessarily Asian, since the world is full of unique and not necessarily Asian people (Waterbenders, not Inuits! Firebenders, not Asians!).

But it just look like pretend Chinese characters. Like a five year old scribbling and pretending she knows how to do Japanese calligraphy. D: I'm so confused

People need to stop hiring Hahn to do their commercial voiceovers, I mean really.:P

Wow. I love how they're willing to acknowledge Avatar in the KCAs when it's this pathetic adaptation but when the original show won best animated series all they did was a 2 second blurb of text at the bottom of the screen that you would miss if you blinked...

That's just so insulting to imitate the calligraphy when the show so intentionally used real Chinese characters. I guess it does mirror the casting...let's pretend to represent Asian people and culture without actually having to. Yes! x_x

THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. I was SO upset when that happened, too! We finally got together as a fandom to make it happen, but we got nothing. DX I've always suspected they had an animated clip of Spongebob ready for when they won, but since they had nothing of the sort prepped in case AtLA won, they got a blurb instead. >|

Hi, newbie/lurker here. I am completely incompetent in Asian languages, so the squiggles don't look any different to me than real characters would. I do agree with everyone who said that it's needlessly complicated. I like to write fantasy, so I know how difficult it is to design a fictional language based on the Latin alphabet, let alone with a system based on characters.

Ten bucks says that they'll defend it (or worse, promote it) by saying that they were trying to "create a rich, realistic fantasy world with its own language" a la Pandora- never mind that the world of Avatar already IS a rich, realistic fantasy world with its own language!

Jeez, there really is no end to the madness. Not only is the fake Asian writing awful, but the more I look at Rathbone's Sokka, I find myself all nitpicky. Even the wolf-tail is off. It needs to be higher up and more or less "sitting" on the top of his head. Of course, doing it like that would give it a more Inuit feel, which they're clearly not going for. Ugh.
25th-Mar-2010 05:20 pm (UTC)
So.
Are they planning to pronounce it "SOU-KAH" the entire movie?
Because I'd die on an entirely different level, then :I
26th-Mar-2010 07:01 pm (UTC)
well, SOU-ka goes with Ong in the mispronunciation derby.

27th-Mar-2010 07:28 am (UTC) - Re: Four actors and M. Night going?
pleaseohpleaseohplease, I don't ask for much, but if it's possible to let their appearance somehow involve several gallons of slime...

Nicola can't act!

Why was she cast if she couldn't act her way out of a bag?
