The 99 update

About four months ago, [info]erikonil informed us that the comic book series The 99 was getting its own cartoon on the Hub network.

Unfortunately, the idea of a kids show with Muslims in it has infuriated paranoid, Islamophobic commentators who have clearly never read the comic the show will be based on. Some people think this might jeopardize the chances of the show actually airing.

This might be a good time to contact Hub and let them know that there are people out there who support the idea of this show and want to see it succeed--or at least see it given a chance. HubWorld.com has a "Contact Us" form, and there's also a contact form for viewer relations with their parent company, Discovery Communications. If anyone has better contact information, please share it.

This pisses me right off. The 99 is a wonderful comic.

Mind if I crosspost this on my Dreamwidth account? (On that note, does Racebending have a community over there?)

I created the community on DW but point people to the LJ community at the moment. It would be ideal to have it in two places, but since the comm allows its members to post (and some posts are locked), I'm not sure if cross-posting would be viable?

Unfortunately! I'd love to provide DW users access to participate in the racebending comm. :/

I'm not sure if DW allows community cross-posting. If it does, then it shouldn't be a problem - people just have to know to post to DW first. And yes, if you post it locked on DW that setting carries over to LJ when you cross-post (at least it works that way with personal journals).

Thank you for bringing this update up. I'm appalled that The 99 is riling up fundamentalists (omg showing elements of Islam in any modicum of positivity?! that's...uh...terrorism!!!!); but at this point in worldwide Islamaphobia escalation, this really was only a matter of time. Gyah, people.

Sadly, I'm not surprised. If the 99 were about a team of gays and lesbians, I'm sure that fundamentalists would object to that as well.

Thanks, I left two messages at the Hub site. I'm going to share this in my journal because if a comic like The 99 gets a tv show, I think it will do wonders for people's attitudes to muslims or at least make the next generation a bit more tolerant.

I don't know why the network is letting a bunch if Islamaphobics stop them though. There are lots of TV shows which don't have conservative values. It seems like they're caring a bit too much about what the conservatives are saying because Islam's a hot topic in the news right now.

And you know they never read the books. If they had they would have seen the whole intent was to highlight the diversity of the Muslim world. This would be like people getting outraged about 'Captain Planet' because it had an environmental message or "Veggie Tales" because of Christan ones.

Eh, might not be wise to compare with Captain Planet, seeing as that show had some seriously broken (never showing the real causes of pollution, mainly normal people being lazy or greedy, and instead making it seem like polluters are only a few people doing so for the heck of it) or messed-up (their population control episodes that essentially endorsed the one-child policy and made people who want to have kids into monsters) Aesops, and might have even turned some people against environmentalism.

Man, wait, what?!

I only have vague memories of Captain Planet, so I don't quite remember any of that.
