The Offical "The Last Airbender Video Boycott" YouTube Page!
26th-Apr-2009 09:51 am
Sorry for the delay, I was very busy trying to do the best I can with the page and shooting!

But after a long wait, here it is!

http://www.youtube.com/user/racebending

:: HOW TO MAKE YOUR VIDEO ::

1) Get a video camera, record using your video feature on your digital camera or use your web cam and any web cam recording software.

2) Read this statement:

"Hi, my name is (first name), I live in (state/country) and I am (ethnicity). I am boycotting the Last Airbender movie made by M. Night Shyamalan and Paramount Pictures due to their biased and racists casting choices. This video is a message to the creators of the Last Airbender film that Avatar fans are a wide and diverse group of people. That by white washing the casting of this movie, they have lost their opportunity to tap into this demographic, which includes my ticket to see the film next year. Thank you for taking your time to watch this video and please visit Racebending.com for further information."

Remember: No swearing. No obscene gestures. No violent actions. No threats. No obscene places (ie the toilet). Be kind but loud. You can wear shades but no masks. Use your REAL first name or popular stage name, NO SCREEN NAMES.

Also, please make sure that your video is an .avi, .mpeg, .wmv or a .mov that is under 1 GIG and 10 minutes before sending.

Otherwise be creative.

3) Send your video to boycott@racebending.com and after review we will upload this vid to the video wall for all to see.

The whole point of this project is to communicate to Paramount, M. Night and others working on the film that the fans of the Avatar show are a very diverse multi-racial and multi-cultural community. And that by offending this community, they have lost ticket sales from this group in return.

NOTE: If worse comes to worse, you can directly record to web cam on YouTube and have us link to it. The only problem is that once we do the viral video, we will have to waste time ripping your video strait from YouTube. So recording and E-Mailing us the file is utmost preferred!

P.S.

If you would still like to have your video done for you in the NYC Chinatown area but did not make it on April 24th, message me here or E-Mail me at jwhite@jordanwhite.net because I can work out a time and date to record all month in May.

Question: Would it defeat the purpose to have an audio-only version? I'd love to do this but I don't have a working camera at the moment.
26th-Apr-2009 05:33 pm (UTC)
Obviously not the organizer, but maybe you could rent one?
26th-Apr-2009 08:09 pm (UTC)
I'll think about it.
26th-Apr-2009 05:06 pm (UTC)
This is a great idea! I'm extremely uncomfortable with the idea of putting myself on youtube, but I hope this takes off.
26th-Apr-2009 05:53 pm (UTC)
Trust me, my video was pretty terrible. Everyone else did better than me and I was LAST. -,-;

So you have nothing to lose with my buck tooth, joysie-ness. :D
26th-Apr-2009 05:38 pm (UTC)
Awesome!

I'll probably not show my actual face because I'm not really comfortable putting my face on youtube for ANY reason (I'm even weird about pictures...) but I elect my Makona-chan plushie as my representative! Um, would that defeat the purpose?
26th-Apr-2009 05:51 pm (UTC)
Would you be more comfortable wearing sunglasses? I think it's important our faces are seen, but I understand your discomfort. :)
26th-Apr-2009 05:52 pm (UTC)
Kind of.

I like your thought in creativity though.

Here is an idea. You can have someone who is not shy con cam do the video for you with your info.

Even better if you voiced it like you were a ventriloquist or something. XD
26th-Apr-2009 06:50 pm (UTC)
I don't know anyone who would do it for me. Yeah I guess I'll figure something out. But it is important to allow people the option of not having to actually show their face on camera. There are a lot of people who would want to do it but feel uncomfortable putting their face on youtube. If they feel that they have to do it, they may just decide not to make the video at all. So it's important to be a little flexible.

The problem I have is people taking the videos seriously. One of the mission statements is that it's one thing when some random person behind a screen name and a Hello Kitty icon declares boycott, it's another thing when people with REAL names and REAL faces do it.

I thought shades and just your first name would be enough but I guess not.

Is the fear because of like unattractiveness or such? Because I have those too but that did not stop me from doing one. And I was the worse one! :D

"That by white washing the casting of this movie, they have lost their opportunity to tap into this demographic, which includes my ticket to see the film next year."

It might just be me but this sentence seems a bit awkward.
26th-Apr-2009 05:51 pm (UTC)
Explain. ?,?;
26th-Apr-2009 06:52 pm (UTC)
I tried reading it out loud and it didn't feel like it flowed with the rest but don't worry because again it could just be me.
26th-Apr-2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
Thank you so, so much for organizing this. I know it took a lot of work, and I really hope it pays off. It puts a face to our movement, and a finality to people's boycotting choices. :)
26th-Apr-2009 06:14 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much for doing this.

I'd like to do a day like that in Seattle's Chinatown, but I probably wouldn't be able to do it until June. Is that ok?
26th-Apr-2009 08:07 pm (UTC)
This is an on going project until about a few months after the movie's released in theaters.

My only thing is that hurry if you want to be included in the mass viral video. :D
26th-Apr-2009 06:16 pm (UTC)
Oooh, yay, I'll definitely be doing this :D
26th-Apr-2009 06:36 pm (UTC)
Me and my sister will most likely be making a video... is it okay for both of us to do it at once? :)

Thanks for organizing this, it's a great idea!
26th-Apr-2009 07:57 pm (UTC)
You can try separate but I'll let two at once fly for now.

Be creative I say! Maybe you can do each alternate line.

BTW, you do not have to say exactly what is written. If you want to add anything extra or similar words, as long as they are not offensive, fine by me. :D
26th-Apr-2009 07:11 pm (UTC)
This is great!
I really want to do this but I'll have to get ahold of a video camera first..is there a deadline?
26th-Apr-2009 08:13 pm (UTC)
Deadline is about three months after The Last Airbender film comes out. :D
26th-Apr-2009 08:48 pm (UTC)
Oh! Haha, ok I will definitely have access to a video camera in 4 weeks (I'm at college until late May), though I might be able to borrow one from my school. What about the mass viral video? When do I need to send my mine if I want it to be included?
26th-Apr-2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
Don't know. My goal is somewhere between 50 to 100 videos, so I will wait and see if we even get to that point.
26th-Apr-2009 07:24 pm (UTC)
I'd like to do this, but reading a generic statement seems ineffective. In my opinion, it would be much better if everyone said something a little bit different, but got the same major point across. People will get tired of hearing the exact same thing over and over. Maybe instead of providing a script, you should just mention the information each person should include in the video. :3
26th-Apr-2009 07:29 pm (UTC)
I think as long as it's polite and hits the right points yeah that could work.
26th-Apr-2009 07:56 pm (UTC)
I agree. It loses the personal feel to it when you read the same statement.
26th-Apr-2009 08:05 pm (UTC)
I think what I will do (even though I thought I said this before) is that you can be creative. You do not have to follow the exact wording of the written statement and you can add things to it as long as it's not offensive.

There are three reasons though why I provided a "script".

1) Legal reasons. The phrase read is a very official and legalized statement of boycott. I feel that if people were saying "like" and "ummm" every 5 seconds none of the execs will take it very seriously.

2) The viral video. Having everyone saying similar things allows me to create the mega video in a very rapid style cut. So imagine the "Hi my name is name, name, name, name, name, name, name" and that is how the final video once it hits critical mass will flow.

3) Weeds out the insults. The last thing I want to do is to end up with another Twitter incident, were people are saying swear words and random things each video that is sent and it directly insults the studio. They will take such responses and just point back that we are a bunch of random fans who are obsessive and simpletons and thus they do not need to listen to us.

So what I think I will do, is make sure that people know the paragraph is only a guide line.
26th-Apr-2009 08:12 pm (UTC)
P.S. Anyone who wants to make their own full on unique video to support our cause I will add them to the Friend's list. I already did that with three videos. :D
26th-Apr-2009 08:40 pm (UTC)
I think the script is really helpful, particularly for people who have trouble expressing themselves but still want to voice their support. This way, you could honestly grab a supportive stranger on the street, let them read the card, and THAT'S IT.

I support people who do a little something different; in fact everyone should. But the script is a good minimum sort of marker.
26th-Apr-2009 08:50 pm (UTC)
What's the deadline to make it into the mass viral video?
26th-Apr-2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
Currently I do not know, I want to see how many videos I can get. It's going to be a high number though.
26th-Apr-2009 09:05 pm (UTC)
Awesome. My sister and I will be making two shortly to send up to you! If anyone's in the Hampton Rhodes area and needs something to take a video with, we can help out there.
26th-Apr-2009 10:05 pm (UTC)
Is there a deadline for this?
26th-Apr-2009 11:45 pm (UTC)
Nope. Technically three months after the movie is released in Summer next year.
27th-Apr-2009 12:40 am (UTC)
So you are editing them together? I don't have to worry about editing myself to scratch out the ums and false starts, or would you prefer I did that anyway (since I can)?

I am laaaaazy so I'm glad this isn't something you need done immediately! I think it's good to have it ready for the release date instead of right now.
27th-Apr-2009 12:48 am (UTC)
Also has anybody contacted Derek Kirk Kim about this? Maybe some people from his petition would want to be in the video too, but I don't want to spam his blog if someone has already left a link there.
27th-Apr-2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
KevJumba of Youtube would be a good person to contact too; he's already done an "Asians Aren't Cool enough?" vid about DB:E, so maybe he would be on board with this Avatar movement as well.

[I've hesitated because like you, I don't want to linkspam anyone O_o]
28th-Apr-2009 08:07 pm (UTC)
Well I left a link on Derek's blog... if it doesn't look like it maybe you could send a link to KevJumba? (I don't have a YouTube account)
29th-Apr-2009 12:06 am (UTC)
No problem :)
27th-Apr-2009 01:59 am (UTC)
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!! This is sooo happening!!!
29th-Apr-2009 08:34 am (UTC)
I will do my darndest to get a camera so I can make one. And to learn how to put the video on YouTube. :x
1st-May-2009 02:54 am (UTC)
I posted a video a few days ago (I think mines the 10th video?) Even though I sound weird in it, I enjoyed doing it and giving that statement my own twist
