Well guys, here's the first official looks at both Aang and Zuko, courtesy of USA Today.

Color coded for your convienence, in both fashion and skin tone!

Sorry I don't have more to say, I'm just going to sit and stare for a moment.

Edit to mention:
I'm hearing alot of people suggesting that Noah Ringer looks half/part/tenth/some odd fraction Asian (or in some cases, Hispanic.)
...I squinted and I don't see it.

As Dkwrkm mentioned, I think we all know what we can do tomorrow:

The "Aang is white! Just look at his big blue eyes!" faction may be interested to note that Noah Ringer, it appears, does not have blue eyes.

Appropriate icon is appropriate.

Not a lot of love here. Not fault to the actors, but this looks pretty dang generic to me. Generic in the white 80's ninja/kung fu/Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom sort of way.

I was expecting alterations in the costumes for a live action adaption, but these wouldn't even register as Avatar to me unless I knew the context.

And I was right, seeing people in east Asian style clothing without being ethnically Asian just looks...odd. Poor Aang there looks like a kid posing for a Halloween costume catalauge.

HA. YES. Seriously this is the publicity photo they chose for Noah/Aang? He looks like an (very sweet) Amuurrrican kid in cosplay, not an epic reincarnated super-powered child avatar in an Asian-based fantasy world. Paramount marketing/graphics/photography/effects/lighting skillz FAIL.

I've been having the same nightmare. >:[
22nd-May-2009 07:23 am (UTC)
"The good guy: Noah Ringer, 12, already had the look of Aang,"

"Ringer didn't need to alter much to play Aang"
22nd-May-2009 07:32 am (UTC)
Apparently he also controls the weather.

But yeah... this? I can't... I just can't.

*throws up hands*

Obviously I don't know what part of the movie those screenshots are from, but Zuko's outfit doesn't look Fire Nation to me. It just looks like an evil- oops, I mean, a dark set of monk robes.
22nd-May-2009 07:25 am (UTC)
Oh wow, so glad Aang looks like a porky white kid about to punch someone... He's also from Texas. Buddhist monk from Texas...NICE.
22nd-May-2009 07:34 am (UTC)
That first half made me laugh.
Thank you, I needed that ;-;
22nd-May-2009 07:26 am (UTC)
I'm half Asian and have a pretty damn strong radar for other hapas.

I don't see ANY Asian in Noah Ringer (why are people even trying to grasp to that anyway??), but it is difficult to accurately decipher from seeing just one small photo of him.

I'm trying to not have any expectations for this movie at all.
Every new tidbit of news about it continues to lower the bar more and more. D: ..Dev is amazing, at least. (Despite being horribly mis-cast..)
22nd-May-2009 07:33 am (UTC)
Ditto with the hapaness and being able to spot other hapas (while others think they are just white.)

I have a friend who is 1/4 Asian (3/4 white) and she looks completely white - perhaps that is what's going on here - but WTF to that guy on Facebook saying Noah looked 10% Asian. What would that even look like? And 10% Asian would still be 90% white, which is the problem here.

This Aang definitely looks at least 90% white. Which is 90% too much frankly. He totally looks like a kid in a Halloween costumes, with perhaps better martial arts skills than the other kids in Halloween costumes.

I will, however, have to download this movie to swoon over Dev obviously. Perhaps someone will just cut together all the Zuko parts for me.

So...I posted these pictures on an Avatar roleplaying forum that I frequent, and got hit with just about every point in the Racebending faqs.
I was trivialized, generalized, digressed, and "this-talk-annoys-me-and-I-am-GOD-head-moderator-and-Holy-er than thou quite-learned-so-stop-discussing-it'd"

I think I have enough quotes to create a brand new "stupid comments from the opposition" thread.

In closing, my brain is quite exploded tonight.
22nd-May-2009 07:52 am (UTC)
Gyah, I'm sorry that happened, bb. I swear, some people must get a handbook of '101 Racist Privileged Arguments' or something that they buy on bulk discount, because it really is just the same damn 'arguments' over and over and over and over...
22nd-May-2009 07:51 am (UTC) - A few thoughts
I found it interesting that a lot of people on the post on avatar_fans had a kinda "eh" or "not really Aang" response when it comes to Noah Ringer.

Maybe it's my monitor or the arrow on Aang's forehead looks more gray/tattoo/scribble like (I have no idea how to explain it other than color wise) than a solid blue. I did read comments on how some things in the animated series won't exactly be able to translate well on the silver screen but it should at least be a noticeable shade of blue that you could tell from far away -- why else have Aang grow hair, wear a hat, and cover his hands and feet?

Also, people have been speculating that the shot of Dev might be pre-Agni Kai or just about to be, so... But it's so weird, despite the fact Dev looks hot, I just try to picture someone that resembles Zuko more...

As for USA Today, dood, do your research! LOL Manipulate weather?

Agreeing with people that the costumes are starting to look sort of low-budget and that as much as I like tae kwon do, I don't think it has as much stylistic elements as the martial arts that are in the actual series.

Though, I find it ironic -- the kid is a black belt (first or second degree, does anyone know?) in tae kwon do but it's also a known fact that Texas has a LOT of tae kwon do dojos AND that there are lots of different minorities -- I mean, summer olympics anyone, the Lopez family, all from Sugarland, hispanic, all medalists in the past olympics alone?! I mean, hell, my boyfriend is a second degree black belt -- there are LOTS of different minorities who practice tae kwon do in my area of Texas alone -- hell I've even seen signs to teach Aikido, Shaolin Kung Fu (hey, that's what the sign says, just repeating advertising) and all sorts of other arts so gaaaaaaaah. /end martial arts rant

Also, the location where Aang is at -- is that the Air Temple or is it somewhere near the Water Tribe? Coz that suspiciously looks like snow to me... If it's the Air Temple, did it HAVE snow? o_O IIRC, I don't think so, but it's been awhile since I've seen season 1.
22nd-May-2009 08:00 am (UTC) - Re: A few thoughts
The Air Temple has snow? Nope, not that I can recall.
I think that's sand there... Unless that's an indication that he's in the Earth Kingdom, but this IS suppose to be the 'Book 1' movie, or so they claim... >_>;

I am imagining him beating up the appropriate people.

"I see why the fan base is so big. It's got action but a lot of moral messages."

Yeah, like, "Only white people are allowed to be the heroes, actual asians need to stay in the background, and the villains need to be brown."

Quote us two seconds ago:

meiko_matsui: His tatoo doesn't even look like a tattoo.

powder_trauma: It's not even blue... It looks like someone etch-a-sketch'd on his forehead.

22nd-May-2009 08:05 am (UTC)
At this point. I just-- I just...

I pretty much (mentally) just put my face in my hands and sobbed while laughing. It's becoming comical but at the same time I am so angry there are no words for it. No words. Thus, no physical and only and internal breakdown/reaction.

Wow, just... wow.

It's nice to see Noah Ringer has learned how to use sharpies in his mirror.

I think that's the ONLY picture of Dev Patel I've ever seen that doesn't make me want to cringe and cover up his ears.

He actually looks like a Fire Bender that's had too much sun and someone just woke him from a nap, he's not fully dressed, that looks like silken bedclothes, and hes VERY cranky. Of course if you, you know, ignore his complete and utter lack of Zuzu scar and say, TOPKNOT?

22nd-May-2009 08:47 am (UTC)
Didn't you know? Paramount can't include topknots in TLA. It'll make the little kids cry. It's too un-American!

That's it. Zuko's topknot is a terrorist. No, not Zuko. Just the topknot. It does really evil things when nobody's watching. *nodnod*
22nd-May-2009 08:32 am (UTC)
I like what they did with the arrow - the big blue thing wouldn't have worked.

Thus far it looks laughably low budget. If this is what we can expect, this movie won't need our help to tank.
22nd-May-2009 08:39 am (UTC)
I actually like the arrow too, although I think I would've gone a bit more intricate, henna tatoo-like look (except not really because that's for girls!)

I have a film make-up artist friend who I introduced to the show, who said she never would have chosen a straight-up arrow for him, as it would just look ridiculous on a real person. You can obvs get away with that stuff in a cartoon though.
22nd-May-2009 08:36 am (UTC)
Shaved head = "the look of Aang" kind of reminds me of Rathbone's "I'll just get a shaved head and tan" comment.
22nd-May-2009 08:41 am (UTC)
It also looks like they'll be keeping the base designs for certain things. I think we're going to see a lot of people getting jarred out of the film by seeing white people in Asian style clothing. It just looks...odd
22nd-May-2009 08:47 am (UTC)
I've felt so angry in the past about this movie. It was clear they weren't even trying to respectfully portray the cultures the show was based on.

The costume looks seems well done, but the tattoo doesn't actually look like a tattoo. It would be nice if it was actually as others have said. The captions with Noah Ringer as the 'good guy' and Dev Patel as the 'bad guy' are so ridiculous and condescending.

I'll admit I don't understood the argument that the show may take place in an Asian setting, most of the characters are white. I mean, I thought it was very clear Aang's ethnicity was not supposed to be white. Pale skin doesn't automatically equal Anglo-Saxon.

AUUUUUGH I just got internet back and this is one of the first things I see on my f-list! D:

Ugh, so much potential gone to waste!

askdjflajsflkajsfaj still sad and irritated because the costumes and BG look so GREAT but but wkahsdl;kjflakjsdfl;jalfj ;~;
22nd-May-2009 12:17 pm (UTC)
Honestly if I wanted a grossly inaccurate retelling of the story of Avatar, canon already gave me Ember Island Players.
22nd-May-2009 12:35 pm (UTC)
Maybe if we all pretend the movie really is by the Ember Island Players, it'll hurt less...
22nd-May-2009 02:10 pm (UTC)
I can see where people say Noah looks part Hispanic. Just like everywhere else in the world we have all different kinds of looks and some are super pale. But this photo isn't enough to go off of to say that.

But yea still the kid looks cute but he is suppose to BE Aang not just dressing up as him. There is a big difference between cosplay and acting in a movie.
22nd-May-2009 03:23 pm (UTC)
Funny fact: "Hispanic" is not a race. Saying someone looks "Hispanic" doesn't mean anything. The colour spectrum of Hispanics range from being as pale as Cameron Diaz (though she's mixed, but still) to dark as Zoe Saldaña.
Which leads us back to stereotypical portrayal of minorities in the media...
22nd-May-2009 02:30 pm (UTC)
So instead of Aang and Zuko, we've got one of the goddamn Three Ninjas and an extra Thuggee from Temple of Doom? It's like one-stop shopping for all your culturally-insulting archetypes, even without 'Katara' and 'Sokka' representin' for the Whitest Inuit in All the Land!

This movie's gonna SUCK, y'all!!
23rd-May-2009 09:07 am (UTC)
I love that frickin' Homer icon of yours. OMG lol.
22nd-May-2009 03:09 pm (UTC)
I saw this last night and therefore had all the time necessary to die of epic fail and then be resurrected by the flames of my rage. So I just going to spend the rest of my time snarking and nitpicking.

example: Is it just me or does Noah Ringer's right hand have six fingers? Sign that he is the chosen one or photoshop fail?
22nd-May-2009 03:36 pm (UTC)
I think it's just photo!fail. The lighting is not that good and the contrast could be better. It all looks a bit flat. Heck, his left hand somewhat merges with his clothes! At first glance I couldn't even see it. XD
22nd-May-2009 03:14 pm (UTC)
*dies inside*

I'm sorry, but if a 15-year-old cosplayer with $50 and no experience with costumes/makeup/etc can do a better job at portraying a character, then there's really only one thing to say:

22nd-May-2009 03:52 pm (UTC)
Okay, I have officially lost all interest in seeing this film, even illegally.

Dear Paramount,

You know, the color coding in the original? Based on the elements, not political alignment. Might wanna try that here.

22nd-May-2009 07:51 pm (UTC)
ALKFHALKSHFDSL My thoughts exactly. DX
22nd-May-2009 04:02 pm (UTC)

The Air Nomad costume looks good, but all I see is some white kid in Shaolin monk style clothes and it does not compute. Dev Patel, a great actor though he may be, looks NOTHING like Zuko. It looks like a boycott is in order.
Ok, so let's do this, for every person you hear expressing interest in this movie but has never seen or heard of the series, recommend the series over the movie! If you have to sit them down and make people watch it 'Clockwork Orange' style, do it! The superb quality of the origional work will ALWAYS hold up in the face of the travesty this movie has become. Also, if DVD rentals and sales of the TV series go up, perhaps we'll finally get to see those OVA's Viacom was allegedly going to produce.
