let the badassery ensue
Saw this over on avatar_fans  and thought it ought to be posted here as well.

The Kyoshi Warriors do have makeup, but like Zuko's scar, the intensity's been scaled way down. It's easy to tell that all the Kyoshi Warriors shown in the background of the first image are of some Asian background. Sadly, all of their faces have more or less been blurred.
Suki's boots in the second image kind of irk me, because they look eerily similar to a pair of Uggs...

Anything else worth pointing out? Aside from the fact that Nicola!Katara looks lilly-white as ever. What do you think of her bending? I think this is the first time, since the latest trailer, that we've seen her not weeping/wide-eyed/wailing.

Also, if this mini book/magazine/game snippet gets released before the movie, I guess if you solve the Yue one, you win yourself a maaajor movie spoiler >.>.

EDIT: Missed some.

I'm not sure why the Kyoshi warrior would be kicking with her toe pointed. Is it more feminine to kick your opponent with your toes?
13th-May-2010 11:25 pm (UTC)
Nnooo, not that I know of. Kicking with toes pointed (or using the toes to kick at all, instead of the ball/heel/inside of the foot) is a pretty good way to break your toes. I should know, I broke three toes once in my kung fu class because I pointed my toes.

Seems like this is just more fail on the part of whoever is putting together the martial arts on the film.

The girl playing Suki didn't look completely white to me.

So, I looked her up. She's half-filipino and half-white. Not-so-white.

Oh man I actually really like the Kyoshi warriors outfits, and even though I'd prefer the actual Kabuki makeup thing they had, I like the makeup these ones have too.

ALSO I think Katara's bending looks very stiff and inauthentic. Water moves, and Katara was usually pretty fluid as well, and didn't she always at least take a fighting stance? For balance? Like, with bended knees? You could just get up and push this girl over.

And what is that pose in the second picture? That's not a stance, that's... it's like she's making animal puppets. "And then the chicken ate from my hand!"

It looks like she's doing something like the Single Whip, and her hands aren't that bad, but her stance...

The way the clothes are all folded wrong is really noticeable. Look, the Kyoshi warriors all have it, too - it's gotta be intentional at this point.

...considering the massive clusterfuck of whitewashing and racebending that is this movie, I wonder if it's being done that way because of how women's buttons are right-to-left, but men's go left-to-right.

It really does look like they made it a gendered thing (all women fold their robes right-over-left, and men left-over-right), which is just... baffling.

Uuuugh this is the first look I've gotten at the Kyoshi warriors, and that face-paint makes me sad. The paint in the show seemed like straight-up war paint to me - like Sokka's face paint in the first (or was it second?) episode. I always got the feeling war paint was meant to intimidate the enemy, by making the warrior seem more ferocious and less human - though I could be wrong - and that's just not what I'm getting from this. This just makes it look like they've got weirdly colored bags under their eyes.

I already addressed the pointed-toe kicking, but I'm still shaking my head over that. Heck, you don't even need to be a martial artist to know that's wrong - just ask someone who's played soccer, they'll tell you that you do not kick a solid thing with pointed toes!

Katara's stance looks wrong, especially in the second image of her. The arms are mostly right, but her lower body is just wrong. She should have bent knees, and ideally, a lower stance (though, I'll let them get away with that, because some people just aren't flexible enough to get a really low stance in tai chi, at least not after just a few months of training). She's not rooted at all. She'd be really easy to sweep, or just go and shove over.

The image of Aang I actually kind of like. Are those supposed to be the statues of the previous Avatars? It actually looks pretty good, kind of solemn, but with a grandiose scale. And yellow-ish lighting! Finally!

Darth Zuko, heh. Not much else to say about this other then I'm still not buying Shaun Toub as Iroh. He seems to young, and he just doesn't strike me as the jolly, rolly-polly, tea-drinking old man that Iroh was sort of acting as to hide his complete badassery.

...uh. Yue... looks like Lucius Malfoy here. No offense meant to the actress, it's just... the hair and the lighting and the dark outfit... just. No. What is a Slytherin doing here. What.

This just makes it look like they've got weirdly colored bags under their eyes.

As I said in the avatar_fans post, they look like they need a good night's sleep.

As much as the mostly one-sided movie squee annoys me in the main avatar_fans comm, the nick-picking of every tiny detail somewhat annoys me in this community as well.

I like the Kyoshi Warrior costumes. I think Suki looks fine. Yes, she is white, but she is also Asian. Also, like I mentioned in another comment, the second picture of Katara looks stiff, but the first one looks decent so I'm willing to give it some hope since it's just a single shot. (Perhaps they tried to go for the most "picturesque" one?)

HOWEVER, the kimono-esque clothing continues to be wrapped around the wrong way; it's like the costumers are doing it intentionally now. Also, I am still not a fan of the CGI that they're using for the waterbending.

I'll admit, I do tend to nitpick, but some of the things I feel are a bit important - like the pointed-toe kicking, and the wrongness of the tai chi stances. The kicking is just common sense in martial arts, and the tai chi... well, that just reminds me of how M. Night said that he thought the martial arts of the show were "unrealistic" when they are based on real martial arts, and I kind of dislike seeing something I've practiced for a few years being messed up like that. It feels like some major disrespect towards the martial arts and the cultures that created them.

Though, a lot of my nitpicking is just general snark to keep myself from flying into a rage every time we see something new.

Is it me or does Cliff look a tad uncomfortable in his character.
14th-May-2010 01:09 pm (UTC)
Totally not just you. He looks like he hates it.
13th-May-2010 11:54 pm (UTC)
What the hell is up with the Kyoshi makeup!? The red circles under their eyes make them all look sick and tired. I don't believe for a second that they could survive a brisk walk, let alone a battle. They would have been better off using no makeup at all. O_o

13th-May-2010 11:55 pm (UTC) - ..okay..hate to admit it
I like the costumes..but still pissed off at the casting and u still couldn't pay me to support this film!
ps: Suki looks high as a kite..

I had my Tai Chi (Tai Chi I, so I'm totally unqualified) class today, so I'm looking at the picture of Nicola thinking "Oh, cool! Single Whip! Her arms look okay... Oh, God, her stance WTF?!" She also looks too awkward, too stiff. But I'm being unfair. I'm just a beginner, so... yeah.

EDIT: And I just took a second look at the first picture, which looks better.

No, you're right, her stance is wrong. The arms are fine, and the first image is... okay (stance could be lower, but I shouldn't judge because my knees are terrible and I can't get very low myself) but the second image is just not right at all. Her legs aren't even close to being in the right position. As others, and myself, have said upthread, it looks like you could just knock her over.

Both postures look pretty stiff, though that may be because she posed for them, instead of the photo being taken as she was going through the form. Something I've noticed in my own tai chi classes is that when an instructor tries to show a posture on its own, rather then in the whole form, it looks stiffer then it should, probably because they didn't "flow" into from a previous posture.

i have such low expectations for this movie.

Bassackwardsness aside--the costuming isn't actually all that bad. I'm glad there's actually some color.
