Boycotting The Last Airbender Movie :: NYC Chinatown Meet Up
21st-Apr-2009 03:52 am

In essence, this is the visual/vocal pledge to boycott M. Night's The Last Airbender film in it's current form.

Filming has already begun and knowing the film industry, they will now sail along at due course. So for us, if there is one thing were people can hit them and they will get the message it's the thing that Hollywood's religion: Their Wallets!

However, a simple boycott text petition would not do for us. It's one thing when a bunch of random anonymous people on the internet posts on some back end fan forum that they will not see the movie. It's another thing entirely when someone has a real name and face attached to that and it's publicized on the internet and the news.

The Last Airbender Video Boycott, is quite simply all of you guys and a YouTube page. I have a candid formal Boycotting statement that people will record them self's reading; revealing their race, first name and location. The statement declares that they will not see the movie when it hits theaters next year and thus they have lost money from one of their potential customers. These videos will then be send to me were I will upload them to our new boycott YouTube page debuting this Friday.

Over time, more and more videos will be up on our page. We will also link to other videos such as presentations, rants and other things on video about the Avatar World and how bad Paramount is screwing up the film.

When enough videos are collected, I will take them and edit them together into one rapid-fire viral video that will be sent to my friends who work in national newspapers and TV news channels.

The whole point of this project is to communicate to Paramount, M. Night and others working on the film that the fans of the Avatar show are a very diverse multi-racial and multi-cultural community. And that by offending this community, they have lost ticket sales from this group in return.

Firday, April 24th, 2009

Outside Starbucks, on the corner, connecting to the East Bank bank between the Canal Street (6) line and the Canal Street (J,M,Z) line.

From there, we will travel to one of the many famous locations to film as a back drop for the Boycott video. Possible places could be:

Kim Lau Memorial:

Doyers Street:

Eastern States Buddhist Temple of America:

Museum of Chinese in the Americas:

Columbus Park:

5:30pm (sharp) to around 6:30pm

Rules and Etiquette:

Dress nicely and don't be shy. You can wear shades if you want to. I do need a real name but all you have to say is your first name. If you are a celebrity or in the entertainment industry and have a popular stage name, you can use that too. I will bring the camera and a cue-card to read off of when you make your video. It should only take a few minutes of your time. Bring your friends if they want to join in on the fun. The more the merrier!

If you have some Avatar memorabilia, bring it with you not only to film with but also so I can identify you at the Starbucks. I will be in a black light-weight hoodie jacket with a black baseball cap that reads "Pocket Smart Wireless" as well as a red backpack with same slogan. I will also have my Lost Scrolls and Sozin's Comet book with me as well and will be holding the Racebending Protest Poster. I will post pictures shortly so you can identify me easier.

Keep Updated:

Every few minutes or so I will keep coming back to said Starbucks just in case anyone shows up late. (I'll also be handing out and posting fliers to fill in the time.)

If you want to keep updated on where I am and such, you can join the official Racebending Broadtexter to get cell phone updates on my status on Friday:

I hope to see any of you in the local area there. Anyone in the NYC area who shows up on Friday will be the first videos to be uploaded to the website and thus get the glory for the first to boycott the film. Later Friday night, the YouTube page will open with your videos as well as information to how to make and send your own Last Airbender Boycott video to be posted on our YouTube wall.

I hope things go well, bring your friends if you are coming and pray for no rain!

If you would still like to have your video done for you in the NYC Chinatown area but cannot make it on Friday, message me here or E-Mail me at jwhite@jordanwhite.net because I can work out a time and date to record all month in May.

I don't think it has to be on Friday (if you're just sending in a video); I certainly don't have time either.

Making a video at home is harder... I was playing with my laptop camera, so that's one way if you have it... I'm also talking to a friend of mine about going down to Chinatown with her brother's camera, so we'll see how it goes...

Note at the bottom:

If you would still like to have your video done for you in the NYC Chinatown area but cannot make it on Friday, message me here or E-Mail me at jwhite@jordanwhite.net because I can work out a time and date to record all month in May.

So you can work out a time and place for me to record in the NY Metro area and you can be up there.

Also, one of the things I'm going to put on the YouTube page is how to make your own video at home.
21st-Apr-2009 04:30 pm (UTC)
Actually, can you put the statement up early, so that people can start working on their videos already? For us non-New Yorkers...
21st-Apr-2009 06:55 pm (UTC)
I'm thinking about it. How is it I put the YouTube site up on Wednesday but not upload any videos until Friday?
21st-Apr-2009 07:40 pm (UTC)
Well, you could just even post the paragraph you want us to read out loud here.

I leave when the YouTube site goes up to you.

(Although, I suppose, us non-techies need any help we could get to put together the actual video part. :D)
21st-Apr-2009 04:40 pm (UTC)
Oh nice. I'll have a talk with my Avatar friends here in the city and see if we'll be able to make it downtown. Awesome idea.
21st-Apr-2009 04:43 pm (UTC)
What's the main video post so we can send our videos as replies. I am in Atlanta so no NYC Chinatown stuff for me
21st-Apr-2009 05:20 pm (UTC)
i am in the city, but i am also about 99.9% sure that i won't be out of work that early, even on a Friday. :|
21st-Apr-2009 06:56 pm (UTC)
Damn. It's amazing what counts as early in working NYC.

Well if you still want to be recorded, you can E-Mail me and I can work out a separate date and time for you if you want. :D

Great plan! I'll have to wait for the info on how to send our own videos in, seeing as I live in Arizona. ^^;;
21st-Apr-2009 06:44 pm (UTC)
Same, only replace Arizona with Massachusetts.
22nd-Apr-2009 01:45 am (UTC)
Ditto, only replace Massachusetts and Arizona with California.
22nd-Apr-2009 06:22 am (UTC)
Ditto, only replace California with...no, no that works.
24th-Apr-2009 12:18 am (UTC)
Yep, only replace all of those with Peru. I think I'll even get my non-Avatar-fan friends to do this, we're a pretty diverse bunch.

In unrelated note:

BIG LONG POST IS BIG! Sorry i was scrolling through my Friends Page and like a good portion of it was this post. XD

I'm looking forward to hear how this goes. I PRAY IT'LL BE A BIG SUCCESS!
21st-Apr-2009 06:57 pm (UTC)
I was debating of putting it behind a friend's cut but I figured if it was left the way it was it would be more noticeable. ;D
21st-Apr-2009 07:52 pm (UTC)
This sounds great; I don't live in NYC, but I'll probably contribute once the how-to is up~
21st-Apr-2009 10:52 pm (UTC)
I live on the other side of the country, but I'd love to contribute to this. May I simply record a proper video myself and send it along? (any particular file type that's preferred?) I think having people who live far away - even out of the country - do their videos would increase the number greatly. Would it be ok if I did that?
22nd-Apr-2009 12:22 am (UTC)
Ahh! That's my brother's birthday! I would definitely go otherwise! >,<'

22nd-Apr-2009 03:46 pm (UTC)
oh, i see. yeah, that's a pretty good reason to be upset...i thought the voice of zuko was going to play him in the movie...would have been a better choice than the guy on that page.
2nd-Jun-2009 06:33 pm (UTC)
I've seen your site and I'm afraid there's some misinformation that might produce blind hate.

First, it is stated in the site that whites were casted as heroes and asians as enemy. But the thing is Zuko is NOT an enemy. Zuko's is a man that is struggling between his father's accpetance and being himself. In book three, we even see him joining the Avatar and teaching ang firebending. I think what people want to happen is that Whites are enemies and non-whites are heores. I bet many won't complain if ever this reverse racism happens.

The issue about race has sadly become reverse racism
2nd-Jun-2009 07:11 pm (UTC)
*facepalm* Someone is missing the point...

Let me try to explain. Since the movie is based on the first book alone, Zuko will be a villain in this movie. It wasn't until season 3 that he joined the heroes. Even then, should the cast continue through not only this movie, but the next ones (God forbid the first one do well enough to warrant sequels...), then we will have a brown villain become a hero by forsaking his brown daddy and his brown army thanks to the guiding light of the white heroes.

And even then, we don't really want whites as the enemies either. Their culture was heavily based on Chinese and Japanese cultures with some Indian influence as well (the Agni Kai for example). Therefore, it wouldn't be right for whites to play the Fire Nation either. All we're asking is that the Water tribe be played by at least First Person actors, if not Inuits if possible, and the rest of the people of the Avatar verse being played by the ethnicities that they represent, which do not include white people ANYWHERE in the original series.

And another note, it is impossible to truly have "reverse racism" against a group that very clearly STILL has the upper hand - also known as privilege - in everyday life. There is still a clear majority of White people in lead roles in every media - even commercials.
